There are 3 main families: chicories (escarole, endive, curly, sugarloaf), lettuces (head, butter, batavia, European, American or iceberg), sucrine, romaine, oak leaf) and finally a 3rd category: watercress, lamb's lettuce, rocket, purslane, dandelion among others!
